Time-travelled fragments

of mittened fingers

Held in firm parental hand

Exploding neighbours’ gardens

Ripe with bangs and secretly given

toffee-apples

Eyes that glistened with a million smiles

And a few deep breaths as

Imagination proved secondary

To ruptured air obeying gunpowder’s plot

So long ago, now

Yet

In these simpler flames

Where logs surrender to stealthy heat

And memory is escorted, glowing

It remains in vibrant view

A glorious recollection

Of children’s delight.

          • The best. How are Tess and Misty with the fireworks Steve? I’ve just got back and timed it brilliantly as the first lot have just gone off. The calming music (12 hours this one) is playing and Maya is quite relaxed just now.

            • Sounds like you were well prepared, Di! The bangs have not started yet, so the pets are calm. Misti isn’t bothered anyway, but Tess gets terrified.
Last year Bernie ‘had it out’ with the neighbours who have bee the chief culprits and things seem to have been quieter since. We’ll see!
We’re having a small fire in a portable iron bowl. And sparklers … plus lots of nice eats.
Grandchildren now in Australia and Canada, so it’s just us … sigh.
              Much love. Stay safe!! 😊

              • Enjoy Steve. Maya’s taken herself into the hall where it’s darkest. The music is soothing so might help Tess. I put the link on my blog the other day but here it is in case you need it.
