We often think that seeing something ‘from above’ will result in greater clarity.
It’s usually true in a situation where there is a holistic ‘big-picture’, and the real or metaphorical aerial view can make clear the relationships at work.
But sometimes being above things can conceal the truth about their essential states.
The above image turned into an accidental illustration of this.
We are actually looking down on a pool of water on a beach, where the retreating tide has left it briefly whole. I deepened the colour, in an attempt to bring out the water, but it didn’t work. Instead, there emerged this organic-looking structure that appears to owe more to cellular biology than beach forms…
The colour was rich and pleasing, so I thought I’d make a short blog of it. As with all such things, its existence was brief. But for the short duration of its life on that beach, it was very real indeed… and fascinatingly beautiful.

This is a beautiful picture, Steve, but I would not have know what it was. This are different when seen from above. My son, Michael, has had health problems since he was born and has spent extensive time sick and in hospitals. Two weeks ago, I took him back to the new pulmonologist because he was unwell again. She said his lungs are better but his sinuses are shocking. She sent him for another CT scan so that she, together with the ENT, could look again. They did this scan from the top of his head. This is the first time they’ve done this ever. They discovered his top sinuses have never formed, he just has bone there. The lower sinuses are a catacomb with bone separating the different chambers. Nothing can flow between the chambers. He is having an operation on Wed an we are hoping for a better outcome this time. They wouldn’t have seen this if they hadn’t done this unusual top down scan. Amazing, isn’t it?

How wonderful, Robbie. My best wishes for Michael’s health. I had sinus trouble as a teen. My mother was friends with a yoga teacher who recommended that I learn how to ‘snort in’ a mild salt water solution, through the nose and out through the mouth. It was a miracle cure and I’ve never looked back.

We something similar, Steve, but it’s in one nostril and out the other.

Ah! Never heard of that one. The one I use lets you flush out your sinuses and spit it out of the mouth. And salt water is very neutral for the the body, but lethal to most germs.

It looks like both a fingerprint and a ammonite. I think there might be ‘someone’ hiding in there too. Wonderful!

It’s a beautiful shot, Steve, and you’re right that I didn’t know what it was. Water, ripples in sand, but that wasn’t enough. Fascinating.
